On February 19, the European Commission published "A Vision for Agriculture and Food," which describes how the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of the agri-food sector can be mutually reinforcing, especially when coherent policy measures are in place.

In this regard, the European Fertilizer Manufacturers Association, Fertilizers Europe, has published a press release celebrating the publication of this document. In it, the Commission recognizes that fertilizers are essential for food production and food security, and that reducing their dependence on foreign sources is urgently needed.

The Director General of Fertilizers Europe, Antoine Hoxha, noted that given the growing dependence on imports from outside the EU, it is urgent to strengthen our highly efficient and high-quality production capacity. He therefore welcomes the fact that the document published by the Commission recognizes the key role of the European fertilizer industry and calls for reducing external dependence by supporting local production to ensure strategic autonomy. As the document highlights, this approach is beneficial for all parties:

- for the competitiveness of the industry, by supporting European fertilizer production and its transition to a low-carbon economy;
- for farmers, who will be able to count on a stable supply of sustainable, high-quality products;
- and for the environment, by supporting the production of low-carbon and recycled nutrients.

Fertilizers Europe calls on the Commission to develop a strategy for the sector that ensures that the European industry, which plays a key role in decarbonizing the agri-food value chain, remains internationally competitive.
